When virality is just for its own sake

I've long held the view that 'fun' viral applications that don't actually provide a real benefit to users are just a fad, a bubble waiting to burst.  Although it's just an early sentiment, and maybe a manufactured one at that according to the article today at Techcrunch, the message in this video that people are getting bored of Facebook strikes a chord with me.  These viral applications, and certain aspects of Facebook itself, are playing primarily on novelty and vanity.  I expect the novelty will wear off fairly quickly.  As for the vanity, well that's here to stay.  It's just a question of how long it takes for people to learn to be a little more sophisticated about their online personas.
